Day 2- December 28 (Water bacteria sampling)

HOME

A bucket was used to collect surface water for bacteria samples. The thermometer recorded the temperature at each station we sampled. (Dec. 28)
After completing our preliminary observations December 24, we returned to the outfall 4 days later. We departed San Diego at 8:15 am, and arrived at the outfall at 10:30 am. Conditions on December 28 were overcast and cool. There was a light chop on the surface, with 6-12" wind waves.

Once again we saw numerous dolphins leaping out of the water and surfing the wake alongside our boat. They seemed curious about our presence, and several stayed alongside for over a mile.

We also confirmed the presence of several lobster traps near the outfall station (B-3), and in the afternoon saw a commercial sport fishing vessel about 1/2 miles north of station I-12, with about 40 passengers aboard.

The smooth area over the outfall was still visible, although slightly more difficult to see because of the light chop on the water. Once the GPS indicated we were over the outfall station, we collected two water samples to be tested for bacteria. We also used a net to collect samples of solid material floating in the area.

Throughout the day  we checked and recorded the water temperature, depth, and water clarity at  5 different stations, located one mile apart from one another.  We also collected water samples away from the outfall, to compare to the samples we suspected contained bacteria.

.

Each of the samples was labelled and stored in an ice chest. They were kept refrigerated until delivery to a state-certified testing lab the next morning. (Samples must be tested within 24 hours of collection.)

We continued testing and sampling at the following stations:

B1- 2 miles east of the outfall
B2- 1 mile east of the outfall
B3- directly over the outfall
B4- 1 mile west of the outfall
B5- 2 miles west of the outfall

GPS, sample bottles, chart, log book
By the time we tested each station it was getting dark- time to return to Harbor Island.  We were treated to a beautiful sunset as we returned to San Diego.

The results of these samples and tests are shown on Page 4
