Hiring Guides to see the whalesOnly trained, licensed guides are allowed to take their boats (called "pangas") on the water in San Ignacio lagoon during whale season (January-April).You may contact a variety of tour companies
in town (see Guide
Services for details), or ask around once you arrive at the lagoon.
|
| Some of the fishermen who live year-round at San Ignacio have received guide training with wildlife organizations in United States. They've learned how to stay a safe distance from the whales, and make sure the whales make the "first move" to approach the pangas. For this reason, your trip time may vary. Once, when our panga was completely surrounded by whales, our guide simply shut off the engine to wait for them to move on. We stayed that way for about 15 minutes, until the whales moved to a safe distance so we could return to camp. | |
One of these trained guides is Maldo Fischer. He and his brother (seen in the photo above) offer visitors approximately 2 hour tours. They allow camping near their home, and have recently added a camp closer to the main lagoon that includes tents, meals, solar showers and toilets.
To contact Maldo and find out more about their current fees and availability, call their fax reservation phone number at: 011-52-115-40250 in the town of San Ignacio.
You can also make reservations to camp
with Maldo through the BAJA ADVENTURE CO. in La Paz, B.C.S., Mexico. This
company arranges for packages that include meals, transportation, tents,
etc.
